The Alliance has sponsored fifteen trips to Velikiy Novgorod to share information and train medical staff at various hospitals. Nine physicians from Novgorod have been sponsored for visits to Inova Health System hospitals in Northern Virginia for training. Manuals for resuscitation of adults and the newborn, translated into Russian, and equipment, have been presented at teaching conferences for Russian medical personnel. The Alliance has sent medical books and journals to physicians in Novgorod, and consulted with the Medical Academy in Moscow.

Working together with the Novgorod Medical Alliance, a Russian-American medical conference “Current Medical Issues – Opthalmology, Diabetes, Hypertension and Tuberculosis” was held in June 2001. Russian and American physicians participated in a Medical Round Table with topics on “International Children’s Health” in June 2002. Pediatric oncology was the topic for the 2003 conference. “Preventative Medicine” and Nursing conferences were held in 2004. Orthopedic surgery, especially hip and knee replacement, was the focus of the 2006 international conference.

The Alliance recently selected its third scholarship recipient. This scholarship goes to a student graduating from Novgorod State Medical Institute with top grades, financial need, command of the English language, and a commitment to work in Novgorod upon completion.
