Alliance in Novgorod 2006

The September 2006 trip to Velikiy Novgorod was successful in numerous ways. As usual, we were warmly received by our friends.

A two-day international orthopedic conference was held. The Novgorod Alliance was asked to bring two orthopedic physicians to participate with orthopedists from Moscow and Velikiy Novgorod. Dr. John Moor and Dr. Randall Morgan, two orthopedists from Sarasota, Florida, agreed to participate. Dr. Moor presented two lectures on advanced knee procedures and replacements and Dr. Morgan presented two lectures on hip replacement technologies.

Due to the efforts of Drs. Moor and Morgan, a Linvatec Arthroscope was donated and safely delivered to Dr. Mona, Chief of Orthopedics at the Novgorod Central City Hospital. Dr. Moor demonstrated the instrument to Dr. Mona and his staff. Later that week, Dr. Moor and Dr. Mona successfully performed an arthroscopic procedure on a young woman using the new equipment.

The third recipient of the Novgorod Alliance two- year post graduate scholarship was selected. The recipient, Dr. Eugene Magonov, graduated from the Novgorod University School of Medicine in June 2006. Dr. Magonov will study Radiology, MRI and Cat Scan technologies in St. Petersburg, Russia for two years. He will then return to Novgorod to practice in his specialty.

Dr. Randall Morgan and I visited the Regional Children’s Hospital at the invitation of Dr. Dmitry Lobko. Dr. Lobko presented four interesting orthopedic cases involving children in his care. Dr. Morgan was very impressed with Dr. Lobko’s understanding of complex orthopedic problems despite his having no access to current orthopedic journals or books.

A collaboration between the Novgorod Alliance and the Shriners Hospital is planned for 2007. Dr. Dmitry Lobko has been invited to study at the Shriners Hospital for Children in Tampa, Florida in April 2007. He will spend an additional ten days in Sarasota, Florida where he will interact with Drs. Moor and Morgan in their orthopedic practices.

We continue to identify opportunities to advance the medical and cultural goals of our organization. It is hard to believe that we will celebrate our fifteenth anniversary of the Novgorod Alliance. I would like to offer many thanks to everyone who has contributed to the success of our organization.
